How to book residence permit appointment in Germany #
If you’re moving to Germany and you’re not from the EU, you will need to convert your entry visa into a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel). This is done at the local Ausländerbehörde (immigration office). Appointments can take weeks to months to secure, so book one as soon as possible
Step 1: Book your appointment early #
- Visit your city’s immigration office website (search “Ausländerbehörde + [City] Termin”).
- Choose the category: Residence Permit (Aufenthaltstitel).
- Pick the earliest available slot. Some cities release new slots early morning, check daily.
- In Berlin? Use the Berlin Immigration Office portal to book.
Step 2: Gather your documents #
Most offices will require the following:
- Passport + visa
- Anmeldung(address registration certificate)
- Proof of health insurance (public or private)
- Proof of income or proof of studies (employment contract, payslips, or enrollment letter)
- Biometric passport photo
Special note for Berlin #
Berlin is notoriously busy, and appointments can take 2–3 months to secure. If you can’t find a slot:
- Check the website multiple times a day.
- Arrive early in the morning and try a walk-in (not guaranteed).
- Use the “Notfalltermin” (emergency appointment) option if your visa is about to expire.
