How to dispose of a dead Animal in Germany #
In Germany, the disposal of dead animals is regulated by EU and national law to protect public health. You can’t simply throw an animal in the trash or bury it anywhere. There are strict rules depending on whether it’s a wild animal or a pet.
The legal basics #
Animal carcass disposal in Germany is regulated by:
- EU Regulation (EC) No. 1069/2009 – rules for animal by-products to prevent disease.
- Tierische Nebenprodukte-Beseitigungsgesetz (TierNebG) – the German Animal By-Products Disposal Act.
The key rule: Dead animals except under specific burial conditions must go to a licensed carcass disposal facility (Tierkörperbeseitigungsanlage, TBA). Improper disposal, like burying in public parks or forests, can lead to fines up to €50,000.
Finding a dead wild Animal: #
Do not touch it without gloves.
- Contact your local Ordnungsamt (public order office) or Veterinäramt (veterinary office).
- Give them the location, type of animal, and your contact details.
- They will arrange safe removal, usually through a TBA or a service like SecAnim.
When your Pet dies: #
Bury at home is allowed if:
- The grave is at least 50–60 cm deep.
- It’s not in a water protection zone (Wasserschutzgebiet).
- It’s not right next to public roads or paths.
- Not allowed: burial on public land, parks, or forests.
Pet Cemetery (Tierfriedhof) #
- Professional burial in a maintained cemetery.
- Plots often come with memorial stones or markers.
- Typical cost: €100–€800, depending on size and location.
Pet Cremation (Tierkrematorium): #
- Individual cremation, you receive your pet’s ashes in an urn.
- Communal cremation, ashes are not returned.
- Cost: €50–€350, depending on weight and service.
Disposal via Veterinarian or Municipal Service #
- Many vets will arrange disposal to a TBA(fee applies).
- Some cities have contracts with private companies to collect remains for €10–€30.
How to find the correct service in your state #
The German federal service portal lists the relevant disposal authority for every municipality.Use this official portal to find animal carcass disposal services in your state.
