How to Apply for the Einbürgerungstest in Germany #
The Einbürgerungstest is a multiple-choice examination required for most applicants seeking German citizenship and Permanent Residency (Niederlassungserlaubnis). It tests your knowledge of Germany’s political system, society, history and the living conditions in Germany.
It checks your knowledge of:
- Germany’s laws, history, and culture
- Democracy and rights
- Federal and state structures
You’ll answer 33 questions (30 general + 3 about your state) within 60 minutes. To pass, you need at least 17 correct answers.
- Test fee: Usually €25

Why you need the Einbürgerungstest #
Passing the Einbürgerungstest proves that you understand and accept the democratic and constitutional order of Germany. It’s required in most cases when you apply for citizenship (Einbürgerung) and permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis).
You do not need to take the test if:
- You have a German school-leaving certificate, or
- You have completed a German university degree, or
- You have a serious medical condition that prevents participation
For everyone else, it’s an essential step to get your German passport.
How to apply for the Einbürgerungstest? #
Step 1: Check your eligibility #
Before booking, confirm you meet the basic requirements for citizenship:
- Lived legally in Germany for at least 5–8 years
- Hold a valid residence permit
- Speak German at level B1 or higher
- Have no serious criminal record
- Are financially independent
Then you’re ready to book the test.
Step 2: Find a test center in your State #

Step 3: Register and Pay the Fee #
- In Berlin, you first need to book an appointment at any VHS or institute that offers the Einbürgerungstest. When you go there, the staff will help you fill out the registration form and complete the process for you.

- Bring your valid passport or ID card
- Pay the €25 fee
- You’ll receive a confirmation and later your test date by mail or email
Step 4: Prepare for the Test #
The official question catalog includes 310 questions (300 general + 10 per state). You can practice online for free:

Step 5: Take the Test #
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Format: 33 multiple-choice questions
- Bring: Your ID/passport and registration confirmation
- Result: You’ll receive your certificate by post after a few weeks
Step 6: Submit Your Certificate #
Once you’ve passed, submit the Einbürgerungstest certificate with your citizenship application at your local naturalization office (Einbürgerungsbehörde). Your certificate remains valid indefinitely.

How long is the certificate valid?
