How to file free Tax Return with CHECK24 Steuer in Germany #
Filing a German tax return can feel complicated, but CHECK24 Steuer makes the process easier by guiding you through it step by step. You answer simple questions, upload relevant documents and submit your tax return electronically to the Finanzamt.
Please note: CHECK24 Steuer is tax software, not a personal tax adviser. For complicated cases, professional advice may be necessary.

What should you prepare? #
Before starting, collect the documents that apply to you:
- Your German tax identification number
- Annual salary statement, or Lohnsteuerbescheinigung
- Bank details
- Health insurance information
- Work and commuting expenses
- Home-office details
- Childcare costs

How does it work? #
1. Create an account
Open CHECK24 Steuer and sign in or create a CHECK24 account.
2. Choose the tax year
Select the year for which you want to file your return.
3. Import or upload your information
You may be able to import information from a previous tax return, retrieve data from the Finanzamt or upload documents such as your salary statement. Always check imported information carefully.
4. Answer the questions
The software asks about your income, job, family, insurance and expenses. Only include expenses that are correct and that you can explain or prove if requested.
5. Check the estimated refund
CHECK24 shows an estimated refund or payment while you complete the return. Remember that this is only an estimate. The Finanzamt makes the final decision.

Before submitting, check:
- Your name and address
- Your tax identification number
- Income and expense amounts
- Bank details
- Uploaded documents
After the final review, the tax return can be sent electronically through the official ELSTER system. Save your submission confirmation.
When is the deadline? #
For the 2025 tax year, the normal deadline for people who are required to file is 31 July 2026. Different deadlines may apply when a tax adviser prepares the return or when the return is voluntary.

What happens after submission? #
The Finanzamt checks your information and may ask for additional documents. Later, you receive a tax assessment called a Steuerbescheid. Compare it with the return you submitted and check whether the refund or payment amount is correct. If you believe the assessment contains a mistake, pay attention to the objection deadline shown in the official letter.
Is CHECK24 Steuer free? #
CHECK24 currently states that preparing and submitting a tax return through the service is free. Before using it, you should still read the latest terms and privacy information:
Tax returns contain sensitive personal and financial information, so it is important to understand how your data is processed.
Will you definitely receive a refund? #
No. A refund is never guaranteed. Your result depends on your income, taxes already paid, expenses and personal situation. Some people receive a refund, while others may need to pay additional tax.
