What is Elterngeld? #
Elterngeld is a state-funded parental benefit designed to replace part of your income when you take time off to care for your newborn. It applies to both employed and self-employed parents, as well as students and unemployed individuals.
Who Can Apply? #
You can receive Elterngeld if:
- You live in Germany.
- You take care of your child yourself (no full-time work).
- You live with your child in the same household.
- You work less than 32 hours per week during the Elterngeld period.
- Your annual household income is below a certain threshold (€300,000 for couples, €250,000 for single parents).
How Much Can You Get? #
- Basic Elterngeld: 65–100% of your income (between €300 and €1,800 per month).
- Elterngeld Plus: Half of Basic Elterngeld but for double the duration.
- Partnerschaftsbonus (Parental Partnership Bonus): Extra 2-4 months of benefits if both parents share childcare responsibilities and work 24-32 hours per week.
Types of Elterngeld: #
You can choose between two options:

Tip: If both parents share Elterngeld, you can plan a combination of Basic Elterngeld and Elterngeld Plus to maximize benefits.
How to Apply for Elterngeld: #
Step 1: Gather Documents #
- Birth certificate of the child (Geburtsurkunde)
- Parent’s ID or passport
- Proof of income (payslips, tax return, or bank statements)
- Health insurance certificate
- Employer’s confirmation of parental leave (if employed)
Step 2: Fill Out the Elterngeld Application #
Each federal state (Bundesland) has its own Elterngeld office (Elterngeldstelle). Find your local office and download the application form.
Step 3: Submit Your Application #
Send your completed Elterngeld application along with required documents to your local Elterngeldstelle by post or online (if available in your state).
When Will You Receive the Money? #
Processing takes 6-10 weeks, so apply as early as possible! Payments start retroactively from the child’s birth date.
