Elterngeld – Parental Benefits #

What is Elterngeld? #

Elterngeld is a state-funded parental benefit designed to replace part of your income when you take time off to care for your newborn. It applies to both employed and self-employed parents, as well as students and unemployed individuals.

Who Can Apply? #

You can receive Elterngeld if:

  • You live in Germany.
  • You take care of your child yourself (no full-time work).
  • You live with your child in the same household.
  • You work less than 32 hours per week during the Elterngeld period.
  • Your annual household income is below a certain threshold (€300,000 for couples, €250,000 for single parents).
How Much Can You Get? #
  • Basic Elterngeld: 65–100% of your income (between €300 and €1,800 per month).
  • Elterngeld Plus: Half of Basic Elterngeld but for double the duration.
  • Partnerschaftsbonus (Parental Partnership Bonus): Extra 2-4 months of benefits if both parents share childcare responsibilities and work 24-32 hours per week.
Types of Elterngeld: #

You can choose between two options:

Option Monthly Payment Duration
Basic Elterngeld Higher Up to 14 months (shared between both parents)
Elterngeld Plus Lower Up to 28 months
Partnerschaftsbonus Bonus Extra 2-4 months

Tip: If both parents share Elterngeld, you can plan a combination of Basic Elterngeld and Elterngeld Plus to maximize benefits.

How to Apply for Elterngeld: #
Step 1: Gather Documents #
  • Birth certificate of the child (Geburtsurkunde)
  • Parent’s ID or passport
  • Proof of income (payslips, tax return, or bank statements)
  • Health insurance certificate
  • Employer’s confirmation of parental leave (if employed)
Step 2: Fill Out the Elterngeld Application #

Each federal state (Bundesland) has its own Elterngeld office (Elterngeldstelle). Find your local office and download the application form.

Step 3: Submit Your Application #

Send your completed Elterngeld application along with required documents to your local Elterngeldstelle by post or online (if available in your state).

When Will You Receive the Money? #

Processing takes 6-10 weeks, so apply as early as possible! Payments start retroactively from the child’s birth date.

Key Benefits of Elterngeld: #
  • Financial support for parents staying home with a newborn.
  • Flexible options to suit different work situations.
  • Available for both parents to share.
