Family Reunion Visa to Germany Step-by-Step Guide #

The Family Reunion Visa allows close family members such as spouses, and children to join a relative residing in Germany. This visa is essential for stays exceeding 90 days and is categorized under the national visa (Category D).

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility #

You may apply for a Family Reunion Visa if you are:

  • The spouse, child, or parent of someone legally residing in Germany.
  • Joining a person who is:
    • A German citizen
    • An EU citizen
    • A recognized refugee or asylum seeker
    • A permanent resident or holds a residence permit

#
Step 2: Submit a Timely Notification (If Joining a Recognized Refugee) #

If your family member in Germany is a recognized refugee, it’s crucial to submit a timely notification (Fristwahrende Anzeige) within 3 months of their asylum approval to benefit from a simplified visa process. This can be done via:

  • The competent Aliens’ Authority in Germany
  • Sending a letter or email to the relevant German mission abroad, including:
    • Full names, dates of birth, and passport numbers of the applicants
    • Purpose of your trip
    • Full name, date of birth, and residence permit of your family member in Germany
Step 3: Register for an Appointment #

Due to high demand, appointment waiting times can be 18 months or more. Register as early as possible at the appropriate mission:

  • Residents of Sindh or Balochistan: Consulate General in Karachi
  • Residents of other provinces: German Embassy in Islamabad

Tip: Use this waiting time to study German. If you require a German language certificate for your visa but do not have it available at the time of your application, you must submit it within two months.

Step 4: Prepare Your Documents #
