How to find lost items on Trains in Germany #
Losing something on a train in Germany can be stressful, but don’t worry Deutsche Bahn (DB) and local transport services have a well-organized Lost & Found system. Here’s the easiest step-by-step guide that works in all German cities.
Write down important details #
Before doing anything, note:
- Train number (e.g., ICE 612, RE 2)
- Departure & arrival stations
- Date & time of travel
- Carriage or seat number (if possible)
These details help staff identify your train and your lost item.
Ask at the train station immediately #
- Go to the DB Information Desk (DB Information / DB Reisezentrum).
- Staff can radio the train conductor if the train is still nearby.
- This is the fastest way if you just left the train
Use the official Deutsche Bahn Lost & Found Service #
- Report your item online here: DB Fundservice
- Or call the hotline: +49 30 586020909 (daily, 8:00–20:00).
- DB will search and contact you if your item is found.
- If found, you can pick it up or have it shipped (a small fee applies).

How to check local transport lost & found services in Germany (if you used S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Bus, or Tram) #
Every city has its own service. Here are the main ones:
- Berlin (BVG & S-Bahn Berlin): BVG Lost & Found
- Munich (MVV & S-Bahn München): MVV Lost & Found
- Hamburg (HVV & S-Bahn Hamburg): HVV Lost & Found
- Frankfurt / Rhine-Main (RMV): RMV Lost & Found
- Stuttgart (VVS): VVS Lost & Found
- Cologne / NRW (KVB & VRR): KVB Lost & Found
If you traveled with both DB and local transport, check both systems.
What happens with found items #
- Items are usually stored in DB’s central lost property office in Wuppertal or local depots.
- You will be notified by email or SMS.
- Pickup is possible at the designated office, or you can pay to have it shipped.
Special cases #
- Passports, ID cards, and driver’s licenses: Handed to the local police.
- Bank cards: Usually sent back to your bank.
- Valuables (laptops, phones): Stored securely; claim quickly.#
